Welcome to life with a Border Collie!
Congratulations on choosing a EweTurn Border Collie to join your family. Border Collies (BCs for short) are very intelligent animals and require much more than just food and an occasional walk to remain healthy.
They need both physical and mental exercise on a regular basis, preferably at least 30 minutes twice a day (morning and evening.) More would be better. Not just walks, but structured activities such as Obedience training, Agility, Herding and other sports such as tracking or even tossing a frisbee to catch and retrieve. Gemma in the picture above sees the frisbee (actually an Aerobie Pro Ring) in my hands, and is positively twitching for me to throw it to her.
I recommend "The Dog Owner's Manual" by Karen Hedberg BVSc for background reading. This is a wonderful book written by a Vet in the Blue Mountains outside Sydney, who is also a Conformation judge. Click on the link to go directly to the publisher's web page for the book. Worth every penny. If you're really lucky you'll find it in a second-hand bookstore. Despite trying, I never found it on a shelf anywhere - I ordered it this way.
I also thoroughly recommend purchasing a copy of "Clicker Training for Obedience" by Morgan Spector (available through Amazon.com) and applying the techniques within. Even if you never trial your dog, learn the "fluencies" and get closer to your canine friend than you ever thought possible. If you've never trained this way, you have never really communicated with another species.
If you only buy two books, buy these. You may also like to consider:
